Jaw joint noise itself in the absence of any other symptoms can be normal and require no treatment. But if in the presence of; muscle soreness (side of the head, under the cheek bone, or under the jaw), pain in the ear, difficulty in opening and, generalized tooth sensitivity to cold and/or pressure, it is usually indicative of biting dysfunction, bite discrepancy, and or clenching or bruxism patterns. Treatment can consist of making a mouth guard (splint); evaluation or adjustment of the bite, orthodontic treatment, surgery evaluation, and rebuilding the bite with crowns (caps).
