Children start loosing teeth and getting the permanent ones between the ages of 6 and 8 years. With the exception of the wisdom teeth, the last baby tooth lost is between ages 12 and 14. Some baby teeth are retained beyond that time because there is no advancing permanent teeth. Missing permanent teeth have a very strong genetic link and often will skip a generation. Children complaining of pain around a baby tooth: if accompanied by mobility, has no existing filling or decay, is probably getting a new tooth. If no symptoms of infection are present (redness, swelling bleeding) reassure the child, have them rinse with salt-water rinses 3-4timnes a day (1 teas of salt in 8oz of water) and control pain with Tylenol. Have the child or parent wiggles the tooth periodically to speed its exfoliation. A baby tooth that is about to " fall-out" usually has a " pinkish" color. Sometimes a permanent tooth does not erupt directly underneath a baby tooth. A visible permanent tooth trying to erupt around a retained baby tooth needs help; extraction of the baby tooth is often required. In cases where there is no room for permanent teeth to erupt is called " space arch-width deficiency". Permanent teeth tend to erupt behind or in front of existing permanent teeth. Space arch arch width deficiency problem need the help of an orthodontist.
