bullet20.gif (510 bytes)31. ALLERGIC REACTION

A true allergic reaction causes: itching, rash, hives, and/or swelling. If a medication, either in pill form, topical application, or rinse causes these symptoms…. Discontinue the causative agent immediately. Take some over the counter anti-histamine medication like Benadryl (diphenylhydramine) in liquid form or tablet form, immediately! If the reaction causes difficulty in breathing, a tightness of the throat and or chest, or weasing. Go directly to an emergency room or call 911 for emergency help, do not delay, this can be life threatening. This is an acute anaphylactic allergic reaction. If emergency help is not immediately available try a friend or neighbor that might have an emergency kit for "bee stings". Contact them and have them administer a shot of epinephrine!

If the medication causes an upset stomach: this is not an allergic reaction. Call your prescribing doctor to change to a different medication.
