Often due to chronic exposure to the sun resulting with a repetitive pattern of; chapped lips causing splitting, causing bleeding, resulting in healing. This constant turnover of tissue repair causes a scaling of the lips and can result in malignancy, carcinoma of the lip. Chapping of the lips is usually caused by exposure to wind, and Ultra Violet from the sun Use a lip sun block with a SPA of at least 20, when outside in the sun for more than one half hour. Patients older than forty whom have a long history of exposure to the sun, and have persistent chapped or scaly lips should be evaluated on a regular basis
