A dry socket is due to a recent extraction where the bony socket has failed to be covered with a clot during the initial phase of healing. The bony lining becomes infection, starts to die, and a new health bony layer starts to form underneath it during this phase there is extreme pain, often called a " dry socket". Treatment consists of packing the socket with medication that includes " eugenol" oil of cloves every 2-3 hours for 5 days until new bone growth has occurred. If you are unable to get immediate attention from your dentist or oral surgeon. " eugenol" oil of cloves is available over the counter. Dry sockets occur from a variety of reasons: poor circulation to that area of the jaw (usually lower), creating a vacuum in your mouth within 24 hours of an extraction or by smoking, sucking, spitting, coughing, or sneezing.
