A persistent cracking, chaffing, and sometimes bleeding of the corners of the mouth is usually caused by a yeast infection. Saliva, usually in older adults, tends to pool in this area due to a decrease in skin elasticity, and loss of " face-fullness" from a decrease in tooth length, lost back teeth, or an improperly constructed denture. Treatment consists of using a prescription anti-yeast cream, " Mycolog" 3 or 4 times a day for one week, and sometimes (if appropriate) a follow up dental appoint to see if denture, partial denture needs to be remade.
