Measure the Performance of Your Medical Plan

Measuring the Performance of HMOs is tricky. Several years ago a database called "Quality Compass" was formed to make performance data available to the public. About 447 health plans provide data to Quality Compass, which tracks 50 to 60 medical practices and services.

But now some of the country’s largest companies including: Cigna, Prudential, and Humana are refusing to let Quality Compass release their numbers publicly. In 1996, 24 health plans asked the database to seal their records and by last year that number had grown to 155.

Full disclosure becomes problematic when health care plans try to minimize data without stiffing consumers. Cigna, whose plans once dominated, published lists of poor performers in 1997 pulled their scores from public view and Humana won’t even share theirs with its subscribers.

Ask your benefits department if your plan participates in Quality Compass, or check Quality Compass on the Internet to find out. If your plan is hiding its scores or is not listed. you should ask WHY?
